Close to 15 000 years ago the First Nations people arrived in North America. The particular aspects of each region in this immense territory shaped the many societies that are distinguished by their language, their way of life and their culture.
Essipit
At the very beginning of the settlement, vast and rich natural resources not only assured the survival of the community but determined the way in which they lived. Established at the point where two traditional navigation routes meet, the village became a natural trading centre. On the north-shore of the Saint Lawrence established relations with the Vikings, the Basque whalers and even Jacques Cartier.
| In the 19th century the development of the forest industry disrupted their way of life, cut off their waterways and pushed hunting and fishing grounds further away. It was during this time that the Federal government created Native reserves, Essipit being created in 1892. The Natives then developed a new economy, one based on trade and traditional art.
Today the marriage between their deep knowledge of their environment and a new economic vision have ensured this dynamic community's prosperity. |
